Article Writing For Newbies

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

As an author I clearly remember the difficulties encountered when I began writing articles as a newbie. These tips are specially written for those intent on giving article writing a try.

Search engine indexing requires most of us to have a blog and articles for proper ranking. I’m sure that you’ve heard that phrase several times and it is not what you want to hear. Relax you are not the only ones. Many are plagued with that fact. Who doesn’t hate article writing at times? some are positively scared of it. Many have called them “necessary evils” – well, as a matter of fact they are.

The first difficulty is to find a subject or theme to write about. Then comes the crunch to get the first line or so written down. That’s right. Everbody has been through it. Once you get a theme to work on and start thinking on it, the writing comes easily enough.

The most important thing is to get started. Do you have a favorite subject that you like to talk or read about? Right pick that subject. Ideas will start flowing with surprising agility. One does tend to assume that what he knows on the subject is not unique and is common knowledge. That is the wrong assumption. Many do not know what you know. No body knows everything on every subject. Everyone is an knowledge base on different subjects.

No body is lurking behind you and looking over your shoulder to see what you are writing. The article doesn’t need to be perfect at first run. It doesn’t mean that it has to be incorrect and incomprehensible. It is meant to be understood by human readers. We are not seeking perfection in our article writing. We are exploiting a way to pass on the information we have. There is no need to provide loads of detail everytime you write. Your readers may get lost and abandon the article. Most readers simply do not have the time for long articles.

As a case in point, most publisher require articles with a minimum of 500 to 600 words to accept your submission. Obviously, post in blogs need to be much smaller. At least most of the time. Pictures can and ideeed should be used to enhance blog posts. They can also be embedded with hyperlinks.

One or two pictures would do nicely. No more. Large images slow down the loading of web pages and tend to turn off impatient visitors. This only applies for blogs – articles cannot have pictures in them if they are to be submitted to Article Directories.

It is best to prepare articles in text format. The notepad application in your computer would do nicely.

Run your article through a good spell and grammar checker (Microsoft Word) but be careful, spellcheckers check spelling mistakes only. Reading through your article is a more foolproof way to discover errors before publishing. Do not use MS Word to submit your article but only for spell checking and then save your file in plain text (.txt) format. Blogs and article directories prefer submissions to be in simple text format.

Your most difficult article will be your first one. The more you write the easier it becomes.

Once you have enough material for several blog posts you will need some tools to publish it. A google search for blog hosts will provide an endless lists of free blog hosts. (wordpress, blogger for example) Sign up for one and follow the directions to publish your posts there.

With your blog settled, find an Article Wizard that will submit your articles to several directories. Article submission can be done manually if you prefer but it takes a very long time. An article submitter can publish to hundreds of directories in a very short time.

Now we have to wait. Be patient and keep your cool.

Most article directories are on time and will review your articles within 24 or 48 hours. But you will find that others will take days or weeks to review your articles. Just a small tip – never date your articles (within the content).

Many directories will reject your articles. Don’t let this discourage you. Most of the time it hasn’t anything to do with your article at all.

Article directories sometimes reject articles for spelling errors which aren’t there or when a word can be spelled in different ways. Some simply reject articles because they are overloaded with work.

You will get to recognize the latter within a short time.

Finally you will encounter article directories that filter your submission through a fine mesh making it nearly impossible to submit any decent work to them. Some of them consider that certain words, no matter how and where they are used, are simply too offensive for their readers.

Don’t bother to submit further articles to such directories.

Keep your chin up and persevere in your article submissions.

Things will get easier as more and more of your articles are accepted and published. The more articles you get published the better are your chances of getting back links from visitors to your website or blog.

While it is not neccessary to get published by all the article directories it is best if you get published by the most important ones, those with the highest Google page rank if possible.

One extra tip – sometimes along with the rejection email, a suggestion will come to contact the publisher in order to ‘fix’ your article and make it suitable for submission. This is a time waster. The time required to abide to that particular publisher’s requirements could be used to write a new article from scratch.

So move on and save yourself a lot of precious time. What’s accepted is accepted and what’s rejected is over and done with. Remember that most good ideas crop up at the most inopportune moments during the day (and night). Don’t wait. Grab the idea on paper as soon as you can. Do not procrastinate or it will be gone forever.

Move on!
