They probably just gave up and told her to just keep repeating the words “alaska” “maverick” “soccer mom” etc. and put words around them.

No. sarah regurgitates the party line but she still cannot answer a question.
Actually, Palin did better than expected, but then again, the expectation was that she would stare blankly at the camera. She did, however, manage to evade 10 questions, by my count.
Biden, who also avoided 5 questions, did a better job, but that was the expectation.
All in all, it was a ho-hum debate.
Palin didn’t do as bad as expected, and Biden was OK.
It was not what the Republicans needed, with McCain’s poll numbers slipping so quickly and so sharply.
I think they did a hell of a job with what they had to work with. The subliminal bombardment of talking points, as you pointed out was eerily obvious to any educated person.
Then you have to understand that Palin and McCain both understand they are not trying to appeal to necessarily educated people
